9.1 MISSION AND PURPOSE

The mission of Outreach Services of the Chemung County Library District is to provide recreational and educational library materials and programs to people of any age who are not able to come to the library due to physical or institutional limitations. The primary means for Outreach Services is the Bookmobile and the Story Stew Storytellers.

9.2 BOOKMOBILE PROGRAMS AND PRIVILEGES

The District’s Bookmobile makes community stops for convenient check out and return of library materials.  The mobile library stocks books, audio books, and DVDs for children, teens, and adults. Visits include, but are not limited to, senior centers, retirement homes, day cares, schools, and summer programs.Regular reviews of the Bookmobile Schedule are made to make certain stops are most relevant to the needs of the District.
Since the Bookmobile is one of the many services of the Chemung County Library District, it follows the same procedures of the District as a whole.  Bookmobile patrons must have a library card with them to check out library materials. Nevertheless, certain benefits may be extended to those who utilize the mobile service.
Bookmobile materials are checked out for 2-4 weeks and may be renewed if needed. If the Bookmobile experiences mechanical problems, bad weather, or is not at the stop as scheduled, materials are automatically renewed and may be kept until the Bookmobile makes its next visit.

9.3 AGENCY RESPONSIBILITIES

Those organizations or agencies that make use of the Bookmobile services can choose to obtain an organization library card for borrowing purposes or require their teachers, students, or residents to use their own library cards. It is expected that the agency will be cooperative in ensuring that loaned materials are returned to the library. Regardless, cardholders are responsible for materials checked out.

9.3.1 HOMEBOUND SERVICE

Chemung County Library District does not offer homebound services at this time; however, the Bookmobile staff will deliver books to senior residential facilities if patrons are not able to come out to the bus.

9.4 OUTREACH PROGRAMS

The Bookmobile staff often present story programs to school groups during regularly scheduled stops.   They also are committed to participating in large community events, such as fairs, festivals, and parades.

The District prides itself on developing a staff with talented storytelling skills.  Story Stew is a special team of staff storytellers who present stories outside of the regularly scheduled agenda.  In order to assure a quality performance, Story Stew will present stories only if the event fulfills one of the following criteria:

  • A community event
  • Not-for-profit partnership
  • Promote the libraries
  • Generate a sense of value for services we have to offer
The Library District storytellers are under no obligation to host a program as free entertainment for any private enterprise.
