The Chemung County Library District provides a wide variety of opportunities for volunteers to participate in both routine operations and special programs or projects. The District’s main purpose in running a volunteer program is to enhance its ability to meet its goals and objectives; however, it also seeks to provide rewarding volunteer work to community members and strives to assign tasks that mesh with each volunteer’s particular skills and interests.
Tasks which volunteers may perform include, but are not limited to, shelving and shelf reading, indexing for genealogy department, helping with children’s events, processing new materials, labeling books, mending library materials, processing weeded materials, dusting shelves and simple cleaning tasks.
The District Director will designate the staff responsible for recruitment, orientation, and coordination of volunteers. Those interested in volunteering must submit a Volunteer Application form. (See APPENDIX H)
The Director’s designee will review all applications, interview volunteer candidates, and negotiate mutually acceptable schedules and duties with those accepted into the volunteer program.Volunteers are expected to commit to a regular weekly schedule. The District reserves the right to reject volunteer applications and to discontinue volunteer opportunities at the discretion of the Director or designee.
Those individuals who perform at least 40 hours of volunteer service per 6 month period will be extended the following privileges:
- Exemption from library late fees. Overdue notices will be issued using the same guidelines for overdue materials which staff observes. When a volunteer leaves his or her service at the library, fine policies pertaining to regular library patrons will resume.
